that into your browser what you find is you land on the nra home page. you get redirected to the national rifle association, to the opposite side of the gun reform argument. and that is because organizing for action failed to register their own natural domain names when they launched. the website tech president noticed this on monday. organizing for action failed to get organizingforaction.net, organizingforaction.org or organizingforaction.com. so all of those sites have been swooped by republicans and nra supporters. seriously? yeah. come on now, wow. but in the department of clouds and silver linings, if these embarrassing early fails from supposedly the greatest political geniuses on earth, if these failures are kind of a cloud when it comes to the prospects for gun reform, around this cloud is also a silver lining, and her name is debbie halvorson. debbie halvorson is a democrat from illinois. she used to serve as majority of the state senate and then spent two years in congress. but now that jesse jackson jr. has resigned, debbie halvorson is one of many democrats who have thrown their ha
of the nra and they are joined by tens of millions much supporters throughout the country. it's on behalf of those millions of decent hard working law-abiding citizens that i'm here today to give voice to their concerns. the title of today's hearings is what should america do about gun violence? we believe the answer to that question is to be honest about what works and honest about what doesn't work. teaching safe and responsible gun ownership works and nra has a long and proud history of doing exactly that. our child safety program told 25 million young children if they see a gun they should do four things, stop, don't touch it, leave the area and call an adult. as a result of this and other private sector programs, fatal firearms accidents are at the lowest level in 100 years. the nra has over 80,000 certified instructors who teach our military personnel and law enforcement officers and hundreds and thousands of other men and women how to savely use firearms. we do more and spend more than anyone else on teaching safe and responsible gun ownership. we join the nation in sorrow over the
private sector programs, fatal firearms accidents are at the lowest level in 100 years. the nra has over 80,000 certified instructors who teach our military personnel and law enforcement officers and hundreds and thousands of other men and women how to savely use firearms. we do more and spend more than anyone else on teaching safe and responsible gun ownership. we join the nation in sorrow over the tragedy that occurred in newtown, connecticut. there's nothing more precious than our children. we have no more sacred duty than to protect our children and to keep them safe. that's why we ask former congressman and undersecretary of homeland security hutchinson to bring in every available expert to develop a model school shield program, one that can be individually tailored to make our schools as safe as possible. it's time to throw an immediate blan ket of security around our children. about a third of our schools right now have armed security already because it works. and that number is growing every day. right now state officials local authorities and school districts in 50 states are co
for reducing crime. >> the nra is clearly, dramatically out of step. >> lapierre dismissed background checks. >> background checks will never be universal. >> you will never get criminals to go through universal background checks. >> because criminals will never submit to them. >> they will not go to purchase the guns because there will be a background check. >> you missed the point completely. and i think it is basic. >> senator, i think you -- >> let there be order. >> i think you're missing it. >> let there be more. >> if chairman patrick leahy pressed lapierre. >> if you're a dealer, that is already the law. >> please, mr. lapierre, i'm not trying to play games here, but if you could just answer the question. >> rights demand responsibility. law abiding gun owners will not accept blame. >> americans are looking to us for solutions and for action. >> this time must be different. >> the senate judiciary committee today held the first senate hearing on gun and ammunition control, in the aftermath of the massacre of 20 first graders and six women educators at sandy hook elementary school. ba
, now what? one of the leading democrats on gun control, chuck schumer said he is in talks with high nra ratings and is in talks with somebody who is perhaps the best rating from the nra, tom coburn, a republican from oklahoma. schumer has delayed releasing his legislation on background checks in hopes to make tom coburn part of this legislation. >> but not necessarily on magazines or assault-type weapons? >> reporter: correct. just on background checks. still sources high up in the democratic party here in the senate say that they simply do not think that those high-capacity magazines or, more importantly, an assault-weapons ban, that that has any chance. they think the background checks has the most realistic of any passing. >> dana, thanks very much. a short time after the hearing ended, gabrielle giffords and her husband, retired astronaut, mark kelly, visited president obama over at the white house. you see a picture that has just now been released. mark kelly is in "the situation room." come on in, mark. we're going to talk about what happened today and where you stand on all of th
think with every bushmaster that is sold, the nra ought to give coupons to "the book of eli" and get "the road," which is a great book. of course, zombies, people eating people, end of the world-type stuff. >> okay. so we will get to this ridiculous testimony on capitol hill as well as some of the powerful testimony in just a moment. i want to do these other stories first. you have to stay with me here. come on, now. >> they had a bushmaster. they tried to eat them, lock and load. >> what do i do? >> he almost died in the driveway. he almost -- denzel almost died, if he had a bushmaster or anyone -- a rocket launcher -- >> come here, now. it's all right. >> have you seen "the book of eli"? >> i have. it's a great underrated movie. >> you know what else i saw? i just saw it. denzel, man, "flight." >> that's good. that's good. flying upside down. >> there are good movies this year. >> flying upside down. >> including -- >> you know -- >> okay. >> the stewardess had a bushmaster, she could have shot him before he got on the plane. >> now i'm going to do the top story. cut his mike. toda
to gun control as we noted, vice president is going to meet this week with the nra that made news just being noted a matter of hours ago. it's to try to create more of that pressure. the president has made it very clear that not only did he win this election but said that the republicans obviously have a struggling brand, this wlous is communicated so perhaps more campaign-style events where the president was in michigan, he was in pennsylvania, he was just across the river in virginia, here as well. perhaps gabby giffords by his side or some of the survivors from newtown. i think that's some of the ways they believe to add pressure to bring across the republicans to not be an obstruction to him being able to accomplish some of those policies specifically on gun control and also trying to use some of those democrats like a-rated democrats from the nra, joe manchin, obviously, bob casey of pennsylvania, both may be able to add to that pressure specifically as it speaks to the issue of gun control. >> david, i want to talk to you about women and not in a brent musberger sort of way but a
husband, mark kelly, an nra ceo wayne lapierre also testified. this hearing is just under four hours. [no audio] >> we have more than 200 people here today and hundreds more watching on our committee web cast. i expect everybody in this room to be respectful of the senators and the witnesses speaking about this very serious subject. i do not want applause for or against any position. the capitol police have been notified to remove any audience interference in an effort to have orderly conduct for that. that is a warning i give the many hearings. we will hear a lot of perspective on gun violence. i will give opening statements. but we have a former member of congress here, gaby giffords who will give a brief message and believed and captain kelly, thank you for your help in bringing your wife here. ms. giffords - >> ok. thank you for inviting me here today. this is an important conversation for our children, for our communities, for democrats and republicans. speaking is difficult but i need to say something important. violence is a big problem. too many children are dying too many childre
? is that what the nra is arguing for? it's just very frustrating, because this is a terrible phrase, there is no silver bullet when it comes to gun violence, but there are a bunch of reasonable, rational steps, and the first two i would point to are expanding background checks and dealing with the magazine questions so the 9-year-old girl might still be alive. >> and ruth and chris, the other argument that wayne lapierre made from the get go is that law-abiding citizens aren't the problem. adam lanza's mother is a law-abiding gun owner, and she continued to buy guns for her son for christmas and birthdays knowing that he had mental challenges. i mean, law-abiding citizens are part of the problem if they permit access of guns to go to people who should not have them. let's listen to just a moment of mark kelly. >> we believe wholly and completely in the second amendment and that it confers upon all americans the right to own a firearm for protection, collection, and recreation. we take that right very seriously, and we would never, ever give it up, just like gabby would never relinqu
